Roughlee Parish News

April 2018 – Parish News

Perhaps the big news for May is the installation of James and Janet Starkie as Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle. Both have given long and valuable service to Roughlee Parish Council and to the Village Centre Committee. We extend congratulations and look forward to welcoming them back as the new first citizens of the Borough.

Broadband and Potholes

At the Parish Council meeting on 9th April we spent a significant amount of time discussing two old chestnuts, the delivery of Superfast Broadband and the prevalence of potholes on the village roads. County Councillor Christian Wakeford was at the meeting and was most helpful with updates on both items. However, the fact remains that much of the village is still experiencing difficulty with the Superfast connection and help from Openreach is in short supply. The Parish Council will be represented at a meeting where these problems will be aired and, hopefully, resolved. The work to deal with potholes is looking more promising, so, we live in hope.

Luncheon Club

Every Thursday Roughlee Parish Council host an over-60’s LUNCHEON CLUB at the Village Centre. The cost is just £5 which includes a two course meal with tea and biscuits. Volunteers from the village provide the service and it is a good opportunity for a get-together for retired residents of the Pendleside villages. Unfortunately, numbers have dwindled in the last couple of years and we are now looking for new members. Please note it is open to residents from all of the Pendle villages so why not come along and bring a friend. For more details contact Gail on 696997 or at [email protected]

Volunteers Wanted – Wildlife, Nature & Habitats

Following reports earlier this year from Lancashire Wildlife Trust on local habitats the Parish Council are setting up a working group of interested residents to look at how we can protect and enhance sites and species within Roughlee. If you’re interested in hearing more or getting involved please come along on Thursday 19 April, 7pm at the Village Centre or please contact Mary on 611126.

Annual Parish Gathering – 11 June, 7pm

Arrangements for the Annual Meeting of the Parish on Monday 11th June are progressing well. This is the formal opportunity for parish residents to meet with the Parish Council and it allows you to raise issues or concerns. We will also arrange a series of interest presentations including an update on the Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership, a talk on the Pendle Witches by Simon Entwistle and a short film on Clarion House. Please keep the date free in your diaries and if you have topics you wish to discuss please contact Mary on 611126.

Other items

Finally, a few miscellaneous items. In honour of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Air Force a new planter displaying the RAF colours is to be erected adjacent to the Fishing Lodge car park. This will be financed by the Clarice bequest. FoRA’s next meeting is on Thursday 26 April, 7.30pm at the Village Centre and they have also arranged a Balsam Bashing Day on Sunday 20th May, 10am at the school car park. Volunteers please! Also the Hanging Basket Competition will be rerun this year with prizes again provided by Salterforth Nurseries and Garden Centre – further details are on the website.
