long standing residents of the village.
Joan Heald had lived in Roughlee for some 23 years. A quiet and unassuming lady she was a retired school teacher who served in many schools in the area. In recent years she had been an active member of the Friends of Roughlee Appearance and her main contribution was to look after the garden opposite North Farm. This was always beautifully tended and rightly earned the title of Joan’s Garden.
Norma Holden was very much a Pendleside lady. She was born in Barley, attended Newchurch School, worked in Narrowgates Mill as a weaver, moved to Roughlee when she married Peter and worked for many years for Hartleys Chicks at Sunnyside Farm. Norma was an active supporter of the local WI and enthusiastically joined in many activities at the Village Centre.
Both ladies will be greatly missed and the Parish Council extends every sympathy to their families and friends.
By the time this News is published the Roughlee Parish Gathering, scheduled for 27th September, will probably have been held. Continuing the approach of previous years we are using the Gathering to broaden an understanding about ongoing activities and some lesser known items of interest. This year we have presentations on hockey, Creative Pendle and the Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership. I will give a report on the Gathering in the November News.
To take advantage of the 27th September date it was decided to hold both the September and October Parish Council meetings on that date immediately prior to the Gathering. We are making progress on a number of fronts including the Industrial Heritage Project and I will give a full update in the next News. I can also report that two benches have been provided opposite Thorneyholme Hall one of which bears a memorial plaque to William Simpson and his father. Activities are now returning to the Village Centre including the popular Friday Night quizzes. The next quiz night is on 1st October and details as usual are available from Glen.
Finally, to report that the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee organisation committee is now up and running and Roughlee will take its full part.
